Smoking Ceremony

Rachel McFadden
Den Fisher

A smoking ceremony is used by Australia’s first people to cleanse the land, pay tribute to elders and welcome guests.

In indigenous culture, connection to the land is central. It is primary, like the relationship one has with a mother. It gives and supports life.

“Take only what you need from the land, no more,” says Den Fisher, leader of Aboriginal Heritage walks.

Aboriginal Heritage walks leave daily at 11am from the Royal Botanical Gardens.
