The Art Teachers’ Classroom

Marian Strong
Teachers sharing skills

In recent years I have had the pleasure of teaching teachers.

I began my teaching career in primary art classrooms in the 1970’s, became an Art Adviser and eventually a lecturer in Art Education at the University of Melbourne. I now work with practicing art teachers, supporting their professional learning in the visual arts curriculum. I bring highly experienced ‘expert’ art teachers together with teachers from all over Victoria. Techniques and skills in making art are shared among professionals; these skills can range from working with clay to computer imaging.

Seeing actual art works rather than images in books or on the web is crucial for teachers as well as students.

The Art Room I work in is often an art gallery or an art room in regional Victoria. We work in collaboration viewing the many forms that artworks take. We discuss how making art and critiquing art helps students improve their own art and share teaching strategies and techniques to support student achievement. Teachers of VCE Art and Studio Arts need to review high quality student art folios, discussing and developing further understandings about how to help their students work towards achieving top marks.
