We had always loved the Victorian bush and had dreamed of a “tree change” for many years. One Saturday afternoon we went for a drive up this way and were just casually looking at property in the window of the real estate agency in Marysville. We saw our 40 acre property (just vacant farm land at that stage) in the window and went to take a look. As soon as we walked onto it and saw the spectacular backdrop of the Cathedral Ranges, I said to Marty, “I think I’ve found my Lavender Farm!”
Unfortunately our South Cathedral Farm’s cottages and Lavender Farm were entirely destroyed by the February 7, 2009 bushfire. The cottages have now been rebuilt – the new cottages designed by Marty to maintain the timeless elegance of the original cottages, but to further enhance the special experience we offer our visitors. Our business provides luxurious cottage accommodation for couples in the magnificent setting of the Cathedral Ranges foothills, at a secluded location about 15 minutes from Marysville. Provisions for a hearty country breakfast are provided daily and feature a range of fabulous local produce. Other meals are also available (by prior arrangement) from our seasonally changing menu that focuses on homegrown, homemade and local produce wherever possible. We also welcome people travelling with pets, as we think pets deserve a bit of luxury too!
The proximity to Melbourne means that it is very accessible for visitors, while still feeling miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city. As much as there is to do here, we love doing absolutely nothing! It is the perfect place to just chill out and do as little as you wish. For those who want a more active break, my next favourite things to do are taking a walk in the local forests, visiting the local rivers and waterfalls, taking in the sights from the local lookouts, as well as visiting the local winemakers for a sample of their wines, eating in the local restaurants and going to the local markets.
Most of us relied on each other for different kinds of support, both during and after the fire. The days, weeks, months and years afterwards would have been even harder without the camaraderie of people who had shared the experience, and who truly understood what an event like this does to you physically, mentally and emotionally. The mutual support between community members was essential during the initial recovery, as well as now as the longer term recovery continues.
We want people from outside the area to come and support the community too, and we think once people have a taste they’ll come back for more. There are so many reasons to visit. You can come here for the fresh air, the natural beauty, the lifestyle, or for the food and wine – it’s your choice! I believe the future of our region is full of opportunity and good things, as we continue to see our friends and neighbours, and also the new people coming to the area create the next chapter in their lives. We are absolutely confident that it will continue to grow and prosper.
