Reflections

Peter

June 1955 was a quite different and modest compared to today.

My late father served in the 2nd world war. Morati and Port Moresby were two of the destinations where he was based. He shared many stories of companionship, bravery, and courage. One of my favourites relates to this theme.

A fellow solider had run out of tobacco and he asked my dad if he was prepared to swap his scissors for some cigarettes. To this day, I have the scissors the solider swapped. That’s mateship! Under general field Marshall; Sir Thomas Blamey; dad climbed the ladder to become; Sergeant Joseph Michael Hannigan. Japan had invaded Darwin and Australia could have been at the hands of the Japanese if not for the help of the United States of America.

My dad was sad when day-light saving was introduced.

Why? The light that shines on the plaque; “Lest We Forget”, will not be seen. I also remember dad reflecting on the need for rations. It was quite common to compare and swap during the war years. Australia has been called; “The lucky country”! But; I wonder for how long. The telegram was another form of communication during my young years. People needed people and this is sadly missing from our world. Remember; it costs nothing to offer and enquire about your fellow man. The computer world has removed the personal touch which, I cherished.

Dad often mentioned; “No man is an island”. Sadly; there are many who are isolated. Looking after your mate is lacking in today’s world. Australia has become materialistic! The power of the dollar has over-taken our value on the price of human life. What now for Australia? We cannot rely on America or other countries as we are so far away. Yet again; I hear; “Go home yank”.

To conclude; we should never underestimate America for providing the freedom we enjoy today.

Australia is a great country but, so young and there for the taking. I pray and hope that those brave service men and woman who gave their lives so that the light shines today will always be remembered by each and every Australian. “Lest we Forget!”
