From George Calombaris’ Press Club Restaurant to everyday inner-city residents, anyone and everyone can rent a pop up patch.

A stark contrast to the city landscape that surrounds it, Fed Square’s Pop Up Patch is an initiative which allows subscribers to have access to fresh fruit and veg, regardless of their living situation.

Created in conjunction with The Little Veggie Patch Co., Fed Square’s Pop Up Patch has overtaken the unused rooftop of the Fed Square car park, turning it into a community garden where individuals or businesses can rent an old apple crate-cum-planter box (or multiple, if they desire!) and start their own garden on the roof.

Renters are able to plant their own produce, and are then responsible for looking after and harvesting their goods.

Just by talking to a box-renter, and having a wander around the garden, you can tell that the Pop Up Patch is like its own little community. Members can leave messages to one another on a big blackboard, renters may get to know those who rent the patch next to them, and if someone is on holidays, a coloured stake in their garden means the renter would be thankful if a neighbour watered their plants for them.

The garden initiative is a shrine to good, healthy food.

It’s a place for restaurants who want to ensure top-notch organic produce for their meals, or inner-city residents who like the city life but can’t quite give up the idea of having their very own garden.

The garden takes the idea of creating a community within a community, and combines it with those who have a love of gardening. It is not just fruit and veg that can be seen planted in the garden, but an endless abundance of fragrant herbs, beautifully coloured flowers and even hops for beer, planted by Little Creatures Brewery.

Sticking to the community spirit, the garden also runs workshops to help people learn to develop their own gardens, and even has scarecrow making activity sessions and beginners gardening workshops for kids.
