My Long Road Back to a Brush

Janice Mills
Janice Mills - First Outing

Janice originally studied at Chisholm TAFE in the late ‘70s and has also been a Graphic Designer/Artist for over thirty years for publishing, display advertising, newspaper, real estate and printing and sign companies.

She originally trained as a fine artist and in 2009 returned to making that the main focus of her business. During 2011 she completed a Diploma of Management and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. She is currently completing a Diploma of Visual Art and plans to go on to complete a Bachelor of Fine Art (Painting) in 2014-15.

Being a long term resident in the Mornington Peninsula area Janice is interested in representing Victoria and it’s flora and fauna both in Australia and overseas through her fine art. Much of her recent work is dedicated to the unique beauty in our garden state and many things she finds that have been left by human habitation in the environment.

Janice has been a member of the McClelland Guild of Artists since mid-2005.

She has won several prizes including third place for Artist of the Year for 2006 and 2007, co-winner for 2008, equal second place for 2009 and winner for 2010 and 2011. She is also a member of the Peninsula Artists Society, Berwick Artists Society, the Pastel Society of Victoria and the Australian Guild of Realist Artists.

Janice won Section A (the highest section) in the Berwick Art Society for 2010 and 2012 and won first place for her still life pastel at the 2011 Pastel Society of Victoria exhibition at the Victorian Artists Society gallery in East Melbourne. Janice’s pastel seascape “The Irresistible Sea” was awarded a Commended at the AGRA Summer Exhibition 2011. Her seascape oil painting of Pt Leo was award Commended at the Peninsula Art Show at the beginning of 2013. At the Little Landscapes exhibition at Bright Space Gallery in St Kilda in April-May in 2012 Janice sold two of her three displayed paintings in the first couple of hours on opening night and also sold work in the 2013 exhibition.

In October 2012 Janice was accepted into the Victorian Artists Society.

This group was founded by some of Australia’s most recognised artists, originally known as the Victorian Academy of the Arts – the direct ancestor of the VAS. Among the founders were Louis Buvelot, J A Panton, Thomas Clark and Hubert de Castella. She is planning to increase her involvement in this group in the near future.

As of 2012 Janice is also a professional member of NAVA (National Association of Visual Artists). Janice does commissions covering a variety of subjects including beloved canine pets as well as cats and of course horses and welcomes new clients locally, interstate and overseas. She is also currently volunteering in the Educational Department at McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park and since 2006 has attended regular workshops with several respected local artists to increase her fine art skills.

In the past few years more collectors have been approaching Janice for her work. Due to studies she has not been able to give a lot of attention to this market, but intends to keep in touch with her growing group of followers as they all show interest in her progress as an artist.
