Love Your Sister

Love your sister: Samuel and his sister Connie

Love Your Sister is the promise of a lifetime. It’s the promise made by a brother to his sister in the shock and aftermath of her terminal breast cancer diagnosis.

Connie Johnson is no stranger to cancer, she’s beaten it twice in her life.  This time it’s different.  This time, Connie is the mum of two beautiful boys. This time, she will not win the fight.  There is no cure.

Connie’s brother, Samuel Johnson, promised her they would work together to save as many other mums as they could. She set him an epic challenge to ride around the entire country on his unicycle.

Not only did he do it, but break the world record for the longest distance travelled on a unicycle.

His most important mission though is to remind every woman in every town and city in the land, “Don’t fall into the booby trap.  Be breast aware!”

Samuel embarked on his unicycle challenge last February (2013) from Federation Square, returning there 364 days later to a grand welcome home event.  His incredible journey has not only raised over $1.6 million dollars towards breast cancer and smashed the world record, but delivered Connie’s breast aware message to thousands of women in every Australian state. Promises kept!

Federation Square generously supported Love Your Sister, donating the space and as much of the costs as they could for the event.  For Samuel and Connie, there was no other venue to consider for such a launch.

Only Melbourne’s iconic Fed Square is grand enough to celebrate this epic journey.

To be able to host Samuel’s return from his launch location is a welcome bookend for Samual and Connie.  And of course, Federation Square is a welcome sight to a tired unicyclist and his crew!

But Samuel’s not done yet.  Love Your Sister is continuing, as there is still no cure for breast cancer. The fundraising goal is getting higher, now at $10m. Samuel promises Connie and the Garvan Research Foundation he’ll do it.
