In pictures: Melbourne’s laneways

It was an unusual spectacle: two suits walking down what appeared to be a dingy alley.

The month is March, Melbourne’s in-between time, where you can still take a splash in the inner city’s outdoor pools on the weekend and rug-up midweek when the temperature drops below 20. The humidity of the day confounds the urine stench of the laneway even more.

It’s midweek, midday lunchtime in the middle of Melbourne. Running parallel to the laneway is the bustling Swanston street and the beautiful adorned Royal Arcade.

The only logical reason the two business men would journey down this particular laneway is to avoid crowds. But they are not rushed, their stroll is leisurely, a dead give away that their choice is not one of pure reason.

Overhead the sky is grey and the autumn sun channels through the alleyway, further illuminating the vibrant colours of the street art that covers the pavements and stretches along the 100 metre walkway.

This is a laneway of colour, vibrancy, creativity and rebellion. The two suits stop and stand still amidst, yet protected, from the inner city bustle.
