First Generation in Australia

MO

My father left Canton, China in 1937, leaving behind my two brothers & my sister.

He worked at the On Hei company and arrived by boat on the S.S. Changte 03/1938. In 1945 he brought his own fruit & vegetable shop for 800 pounds at 177 Martin St. Gardenvale. In his first year he took in 6818 pounds. Part of his visa was that he remained at the On Hei company, and in 1947 he applied for an extension which was granted for 5 years. It was not until 1947 that my mother was able to join him, and I was born October 1950. I also have a older sister and younger brother, both born in Australia. He also brought another fruit shop at 227 Carlisle St Balaclava, supplying fruit and vegetables to Melbourne Grammar Boarding School, Grimwade and Perry house. On January 1st 1954, the shop in Balaclava was changed to a Chinese and Australian cafe, which he operated until it was sold to ANZ Bank. My parents & brother gained permanent residence in September 1961. It took many years before my grandmother & my other brother were granted a visa. My older sister still lives in China I think, I have never met her family they may have moved to Canada. Both my parents & grandmother have pased away when I was still a teenager. I am tracing my family history at the moment.
