Blindly, I bought a DSLR, thinking that it would make my images looks awesome. I was very disappointed and thinking that my investment was a waste of money. My curiosity made me want to find find out more. So I watched some YouTube tutorials and practiced photographing strangers in the city. The more I practiced, the luckier I became, it was my source of happiness. I find that people smile to me when I photograph them which makes me happy.
I carry my camera wherever I go, even to work. When I photograph people on the street, I sometimes ask for their email address and send them a copy of the photo. Without fail, I get a reply from the person stating how happy they were to receive my photograph.
My photography gear usually consists of, Fujifilm x-pro 1 with a 18mm, 35mm and a 60mm lens and a CCTV 35mm lens with a converter. I also carry Fujifilm x100s, lens pen, lens cloth, waterbottle and a little monopod. On special days, I take my Rolleiflex 2.8f, a pinhole camera and a 50mm f1.2 fitted on Nikon F3, with a few films.
I love travelling and usually travel light with Fujifilm x100s, lens hood with filter, small tripod, lens pen, a few batteries and memory cards.
My advise to those who are willing to give photography a try, is to never leave home without your camera, smile a lot and pretending to be a tourist helps. Photography is about sharing and interacting with people on the street so get your gear ready to capture that moment. I find that people on the street are more relaxed when I use a small camera than a DSLR.
I often explore and walk aimlessly in the city looking for interesting subjects with a great light and background. My favorite spot is the little lane ways in the city.
