Creative Garments

Deb Child Frankston High School
Student Work

Year 9 and 10 students at Frankston High School have the opportunity to participate in a diverse range of Visual Arts subjects focusing on specific art practices.

One popular subject choice is Costume and Theatrical Studies. In this class, a major unit of work involves students producing a non-functional garment, which includes some components of the garment being made using recycled materials. This task requires students to be incredibly resourceful as they gather and collect materials that they can potentially use in their design. They are being imaginative and innovative in exploring their individual ideas, which enables them to develop a deeper understanding of art history and cultural contexts. As they examine the traditional roles of fine art and craft they consider the notion of high art. Students really enjoy the challenges that arise in the construction of these pieces.

The students gain a great deal from the problem solving challenges that arise during the making of the pieces and there display and presentation in the schools annual art show.
