Upon driving into the town I just knew, “this is it”. When we saw a property with a house on the block for sale in the main street, we knew we had to buy it. In 1995, we moved in and built a mud brick studio and shop. Where else could you live and work right in the main street of a quaint country village?
By 2002 we had purchased an 18-seater bus and commenced a service to the Lake Mountain snowfields. This has now been replaced with a 28-seater bus and we cater to any transport needs, such as a wedding guest shuttle, airport pick-ups and local sightseeing day trips.
The pottery production ceased a few years ago, but the showroom area filled is with new stock. Our major line is possum and merino knitwear, and we have oilskin coats, leather hats and denim and wool jeans. We also sell homewares, wall art and children’s toys. The Black Saturday fires took everything we had, but we have rebuilt our house and shop in the same position and have been back in operation for over two years now.
I never tire of going up to Lake Mountain during the snow season, as every day can be different. The excitement of children (and adults) on the bus when they see snow for the first time is incredible! I just wish more people could experience the Marysville lifestyle – the ducks waddling along the main street and the peace and the scenery of the area are just a couple of things that makes living here feel so special.
The community that has stayed and rebuilt all understand each other, as we have all been through the same issues in the last few years. Community is so important to us locals. I remember someone once saying about Marysville, “It’s a place where everyone knows each dog by name”. Despite our setbacks, I see a very positive future for the region and its community. It may take a little longer than once hoped, but there are public facilities in place that can support a town much larger than it was before the fires. We have the playground, school, and community centre – with more things on their way. It is actually quite exciting.
Marysville – Wish You Were Here
