Caroline Chisholm, the ‘Emigrants Friend’, arrived in Sydney in 1838 and became a great leader in social reform.

Caroline established hostels for unemployed women, welfare and employment agencies and upon returning to England, family emigration schemes.

From 1841-1844 these hostels and programs provided assistance to approximately 14,000 people.
