Brunch just got serious

Rachel McFadden
For newbies Alex and Marie brunch is serious business.

It took a trip across the world for Marie and Alex to become good friends, but the two self-proclaimed food connoisseurs have found much to bond over in Melbourne’s brunch scene.

“Yeah, I thought he was really arrogant when I first meet him,” Marie snickers.

“Oh, whatever Tribal woman,” Alex retorts.

“My hair is not that wild,” says the curly-haired, barefooted and sun-kissed Marie.

Their friendly banter continues.

Alex turns bashful: “Actually I probably was a bit back then.”

They met six years ago in their homeland, Canada.

Marie is now in Australia to study international leadership and Alex to complete an internship in architecture.

Soon after Alex arrived they caught up in Melbourne’s trendy inner north and found there were things they could agree on: brunch.

“Seriously, brunch is the bomb,” they say, almost in unison.

“I really had no expectations about the food, but Melbourne food has blown me away,” Marie says.

Alex: “Well, I was expecting to have a meat pie every day,” (laughs)

Marie: “And I thought Tim Tams were a daily staple,” (winks).

For the duo, brunch, a traditionally light-hearted affair has turned into serious business with a weekly, sometimes twice weekly meeting.

They are opening up for guest appearances, and they are considering (unofficially) registering their name: BBB for Bros, Babes, Brunch.

So what is their favorite spot?

Marie: “We have only really taken on the inner north.”

“Yeah, I really think it is time we brunch-out.”

“ha-ha-ha BRUNCH-out,” Alex repeats with the distinguishable Canadian accent.

Someone (Alex) is impressed by the dad joke and Marie rolls her eyes and laughs along.

“I really like Australia. I love the Australian sense of humor and everyone is really friendly,”

She brought it up (love) so it has to be asked: are they romantically involved?

“Hahaha.. . no. It’s more like brother and sister.”

Sorry folks, no Breakfast at Tiffany’s here, oh wait, isn’t that a story about two friends who fall in love?

“Enough!” they laugh, “we just get our brunch-on.”
