Ansett Collapses

In September 2001 Ansett Airlines, Australia’s second largest domestic carrier went into administration after suffering financial collapse.

Started by Sir Reginald Miles Ansett in 1935, the company was bought out in the 1970s and again changed hands in 2000 before going under.

The collapse had a big impact on confidence in the aviation sector and also saw 16,000 staff lose their jobs – making it the largest mass job loss event in Australian history.
