As a part of my study – Disability Certificate 4, I must complete 280 hours of work placement. That was what led me to ADEC (Action on Disability within Ethnic Communities Inc). I feel ashamed to say but at the beginning I thought “it doesn’t matter which organisation I go to, just give me a work placement”, this is because I was extremely frustrated about running out of time to start my work placement.
I started looking up organisations and then I found the Artability program, it caught my attention immediately! I’m not a person really that into art and I don’t do any artwork, but I love creative things, so I thought this would be a very interesting program for me.
Through the concept of art therapy the workshop component of the program aims to deliver fun and relaxing sessions to reduce pain and anxiety and build confidence and social skills.
I’ve been very excited with what I’ve been doing at the work placement, I have learnt a lot relating to what I’m studying. The whole concept of studying disability is putting yourself out there to help people. I used to think working in a facility where you feed and shower clients was the only way you can help, I never imagined you could support special needs people in this way.
