Conducted by the wonderful Richard Gill, the orchestra showcased incredible talent across varied repertoire. It reflected Melbourne Youth Music’s goal of nurturing talent and inspiring young people to reach their potential.
The concert kicked off with a bang as the orchestra launched into Offenbach’s Overture to Orpheus in the Underworld. The audience sat in awe as they witnessed beautifully-executed and delicate solos throughout the piece and grins crossed their faces as the orchestra broke into the well-known “can-can”. The piece was rounded off perfectly by the sheer volume and energy of the full orchestra’s final crescendo.
Kats-Chernin’s Golden Kitsch was a definite concert highlight as percussionist Eugene Ughetti commanded the stage – his performance made only more fabulous by the shimmer of his golden jacket. Receiving tumultuous applause and a standing ovation, the piece was certainly an audience and orchestra favourite.
Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique proved to be a stunning choice to finish. A piece with such rich depth and warmth was further complemented by its stark contrast to the dreary, blustery day outside. An outstanding way to complete the year, the orchestra has received only praise from those who were lucky enough to see them perform.
