Remembering the Fallen of Pozieres

Barry Gracey
Battle for Pozieres

As we move into the Centenary of the ANZAC I have been given the rare opportunity to hear the stories of family members who left our shores to fight for King and Country during the Great War.

These are not the stories of Men that fought in the better known battles, but Men that fought in the greatest loss of life Australia has ever had in Battle, the Battle for Pozieres.

In this Battle Australia lost 7000 Men and 16000 were wounded in 6 weeks, with 4113 of those that died being totally destroyed in the Battle and their bodies never recovered.

For a Battle fought over 100 years ago, the effects of losing these men, or having them come home maimed, have rippled down through the years and still is a force in their families today.

The stories we have heard from families throughout Australia have been both inspiring and heart breaking, but all are stories of Men that fought and sacrificed all for their country.

These are not the great names of Australia or the famous Generals – these are the stories of your drover from Cunnamulla, the labourer from Croydon, the railway worker from Toowoomba, every man of all types who answered the call.

They did not fight and die in one of the well known battles, but served their country in all the places that most Australians have forgotten today.

One of the most pleasing aspects of this journey is how the youth of Australia has embraced the memories of these Men. They are now leading the way in paying tribute to our Fallen, and will ensure that the sacrifice of all Australian Soldiers will never be forgotten, whether they fell in battle or came home.

We use the phrase Lest We Forget to remind people of what our Men have sacrificed.

Our journey has shown us that Australians will never forget – and that is truly fitting.
