Protect Our ABC Snap Action, May 2014

GetUp Snap Action against ABC funding cuts

On Saturday 3 May, over 2,000 Australians gathered in Melbourne’s famous Federation Square to show their support for their ABC and SBS – our public broadcasters who’s funding was at the time under threat from the Abbott Government.

This family-friendly snap action was bright and colourful – including face paint, cheeky banners and clever costumes, even B1 & B2 made an appearance! Inspiring speeches were given by ex-ABC staff, comedians, authors and campaigners attracting dozens of mainstream media outlets. Towards the end of the event the crowd formed into a giant ABC sign made of humans, holding their hands high in the air as they chanted is unison “Hands Off Our ABC”.

This event, as well as many similar activities run by GetUp in Federation Square, show the power of this stunning and renowned public space for bringing together the community and allowing them to put their passions, voices and heartfelt opinions on display. Working with Federation Square is, and will continue to be, an absolute privilege.
