Erik ten Hag responds to Casemiro’s suspension ahead of Arsenal clash with a dig towards the Gunners
Arsenal were sensational against Tottenham in the North London Derby on Sunday. Mikel Arteta’s side came out comfortable 2-0 winners.
The victory means that the Gunners moved eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table. Manchester City dropped points against Manchester United on the same matchday which allowed Arsenal to extend their gap from second place.
The Red Devils have emerged as a title challenger for the Gunners as they now sit one place behind Manchester City, although the two teams are level on points. Arsenal are set to play against Manchester United in a crucial clash on Sunday, but the Gunners have been handed a major boost following the suspension of Casemiro.
The Brazilian was booked in the 79th minute of Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening. This was Casemiro’s fifth yellow card of the season, meaning he misses the clash against Arsenal due to the toting up of yellow cards.
Despite his importance to the Manchester United side, Erik ten Hag gloated that he will not be needed to overcome Arsenal. Speaking to Sky after the draw against Palace, he said: “We beat Arsenal last time without Casemiro and we will have to do it again.
“I think it’s instinctive, he went for the ball but he missed it. It was also a situation down the right-hand side that could have been a dangerous situation so he wanted to stop it, and that was his reaction.”
Manchester United beat Arsenal 3-1 earlier in the season, which also proved to be the Gunners’ only defeat in the Premier League so far in this campaign. The Red Devils goalkeeper David de Gea also added his two-pence on Casemiro’s suspension.
“I don’t get why Arsenal don’t play as we have to play in the same week and they don’t,” De Gea added. “Now we are missing one of our best players, I don’t understand. Now we miss him for a big game and it is a big loss for us.”
