Eddie Howe and Mikel Arteta

Newcastle United will travel without fear to the Emirates on Tuesday night and Mikel Arteta knows Arsenal are coming up against a side who believe they can get a result.

Mikel Arteta has labelled Newcastle United a ‘threat’ because the high-flying Magpies now have the ‘set-up’ to compete ahead of Tuesday night’s huge game at the Emirates.

First and third will face off in the capital tomorrow as Newcastle bid to get a result at Arsenal for the first time since 2010. Yes, remarkably, Arsenal have won the previous 10 league meetings at the Emirates by an aggregate score of 29-5.

However, the league leaders know they are about to face the strongest Newcastle outfit in years following a transformative 2022 for the club. Not only did Newcastle end the year in the top three of the Premier League for the first time since Sir Bobby Robson’s time in charge; they also became the first side since Kevin Keegan’s Entertainers to win so many top-flight fixtures (21) in a calendar year.

With memories still fresh of Newcastle’s 2-0 win in the reverse fixture at St James’ Park last May, you can see why Arsenal star Bukayo Saka referred to third-placed Magpies as ‘one of the best teams in the league’. Newcastle have only pushed on since that memorable win and Eddie Howe’s side has since taken points off Man City, Spurs, Manchester United, and Chelsea this season.

Newcastle are unbeaten in 14 games in all competitions and that form has certainly not gone unnoticed. Man City boss Pep Guardiola, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, and Leicester City coach Brendan Rodgers are among those respected figures in the game who have all talked up Newcastle’s credentials in the last week or so. Now Arteta has followed suit.

“It’s a huge club, a club with such history in this country,” the Arsenal boss told reporters. “Now they have a real set-up with a coach that has brought something different to the club – an atmosphere they have created of belief and big ambitions – and owners who are able to build the team quickly and compete with the best teams. They are a threat.”
