Chelsea are trying to hijack Arsenal’s bid to sign Mykhaylo Mudryk but the Gunners can hope to repeat Barcelona’s transfer trick to beat the Blues.

Arsenal continues to be locked in a battle with Chelsea to sign Mykhaylo Mudryk. The Shakhtar Donetsk star is the priority for the Gunners this window but finds themselves again facing competition from their London rivals.

The Blues have a history of signing players once linked with Arsenal – Eden HazardJuan Mata and N’Golo Kante to name a few from the last decade. However, the dynamic of the two clubs has shifted considerably and Chelsea are firmly below the Gunners at the current state of play.

Arsenal are top of the Premier League and have a gap to tenth-placed Chelsea of 19 points having played a game more but with Manchester City the west London club’s next opponents. Todd Boehly is reported by the Telegraph to be behind the move by Chelsea to try and hijack Arsenal’s move for the winger.

There are certainly similarities to Arsenal’s short-term pursuit of Raphinha in the summer of last year. However, the then Leeds United winger had his heart set on a move to Barcelona and despite Chelsea offering an amount of money that the northern club were willing to accept, the Brazilian international refused the move and waited for the Catalonian side to stump up the money.

Arsenal here could lean very much on Mudryk’s apparent desire to choose them. There have been reports that Mudryk has already agreed on a five-year deal with the Gunners which stands them in very strong stead to lure him away.

That said, Shakhtar Donetsk are said to be holding firm on their €100million (£88.2million) valuation of the player. However, like with Raphinha, Arsenal will be hoping that the player’s desire to move to north London will aid in finding a compromise on price.

Barcelona eventually got their man and by the end of the window, Chelsea were left with signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who has not excelled at the club. The hope will be for the Gunners that history will repeat itself and Arsenal will win the race for Mudryk.

The difference between the deals might be the money associated with it, however. understands that Arsenal are reluctant to make Mudryk become their record signing and are working to avoid this.

That said, it is likely that Mudryk will go higher than the £55million fee Barcelona paid Leeds. For a player who currently provides competition to the Arsenal front three, it is a sizeable and obviously risky choice to go so high; although Raphinha similarly was in this same position with Bukayo Saka comfortably ahead of him.
